Seems like an appropriate subject on the approach to Halloween. I have spent more than a year compiling information and working to understand this subject so that I could write about it. My most recent email newsletter was about it, and you can read it here. In a nutshell, genetically modified organisms are used in so many different aspects of food production that even with labeling they will be difficult to avoid if you eat processed food. The only way to avoid consuming genetically engineered food is to eat whole foods (you know, like fruit, vegetables, fish in their own skin) from trusted suppliers near you, or are labelled "Organic". The reason we would want to avoid eating GMO grains, especially, is that most of these plants are engineered to withstand large amounts of herbicides which are proving to be more toxic than previously thought. There's no way to wash food clean, especially when those ingredients have been ground up and put into processed food. Some food plants are genetically modified to actually produce pesticides, which creates a new batch of problems. If you have the opportunity to vote FOR labeling, it would help, if only to bring it to more people's attention what they are eating. The fact that big business is willing to spend millions defeating these labeling laws speaks to how much money they will make by keeping Americans in the dark. Another way that you can take action is to boycott the businesses that oppose labeling GMOs. Good luck out there!
